Generally speaking, most of us lump pediatricians into one broad category: family doctors for kids. In reality, there are more than 20 distinct specialties of pediatricians! For example, a pediatric gastroenterologist would specialize in treating conditions and disorders of the stomach in digestives systems in those under 18. A pediatric neurologist would focus on disorders and diseases in the brains of those under 18. There so many specialties to choose from.

Of course, you won’t find these specialties at your local family practice or pediatrics office. Generally, you will see your pediatrician and get a referral to one of these specialists should the need arise. Most specialist pediatricians are located within hospitals or at stand-alone offices. Some will have private practices that you can visit. The point is, there are numerous pediatric specialties out there to help your child with a variety of issues or ailments. Just because someone is a pediatrician, doesn’t mean they are a one-trick pony!

Bonus fact: Some of these pediatric specialties require doctors to receiving schooling well beyond the average 11 years post-high school.
